The Sustainability Advisory Board was created by Resolution No. 2014-M-57, adopted by the Board of County Commissioners on September 23, 2014. Resolution No. 2020-M-40 was adopted by the Board on September 22, 2020, revising the creation and purpose, responsibilities and duties, and membership categories.

The Sustainability Advisory Board consists of nine members appointed from the following categories: economic development or business representative; environmental protection, natural resources management, or urban tree canopy management representative; social services or community health representative; arts and cultural affairs or at large representative; urban planning or transportation planning representative; education or at large representative; housing and community development leadership representative; smart infrastructure or resiliency representative; and renewable energy or high-performance buildings representative.

The Advisory Board shall have the following responsibilities and duties: (a) Review progress and provide recommendations to the Board on the implementation of all County Sustainability and Resilience Plans and any adjustments to these Plans, in order to continuously improve efficiency, cost effectiveness, and environmental and social impacts. (b) Provide oversight to ensure continuous improvement toward all County Sustainability and Resilience Plans? goals and targets. (c) Provide an annual report to the Board on its activities, goals, and objectives. (d) Work toward achieving all future sustainability and resiliency initiatives set forth by the County.
