VETERANS COUNSELOR

FLSA Status: Exempt 

General Functions
   Advises and assists veterans, their dependents, or any other authorized individual acting on the veteran's behalf in matters pertaining to veterans' rights and the entitlements available to them under various federal, state, county, or city statutes.

Work is performed in an office environment and through field visits to clients, in order to provide or ascertain services needed. Work is performed under the supervision of the Veterans' Services Officer and is reviewed through observations, conferences, reports and results achieved.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Assists and represents veterans, their dependents or qualified beneficiaries in presenting claims for, applying for, and/or drafting appeals of denials of veterans' benefits, social services, or public assistance in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, rules and regulations.
  • Researches, analyzes, interprets and apply provisions of such laws, rules and regulations. Interviews, assesses the needs of the client and provides counseling.
  • Plans, develops, and presents programs to large groups regarding veteran-related issues.
  • Monitors changes in veterans, social services, and public assistance related laws, rules and regulations. Performs related work as required.
  • Performs other related work as required.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Must be an honorably discharged wartime veteran, or the surviving spouse of any such veteran, in accordance with Florida Statute 1979, Sec. 292.11.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and four years experience in one of more of the following: Recruiting, Casualty Assistance, Personnel Customer Service, Counseling, Medical related or leadership duties or as a Senior Enlisted Advisor; OR an equivalent combination of relevant education or experience.

Must attain Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs Service Officer certification within one year of hire.

Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in word processing functions, preferably Microsoft Word and email functions.
