TEACHER ASSISTANT

General Functions
   This is educational work assisting a teacher in providing a learning experience in a conducive environment.

This position assists in developing, planning and conducting education, developmentally appropriate activities, assessing educational needs, establishing learning goals and preparing lesson plans. General supervision is received from a higher grade employee and is reviewed for achievement of desired results. This position requires physical fitness and includes a variety of activities such as running, ability to move quickly, playing and being actively involved with children. It also includes bending, stooping, and sitting at children's level.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
   Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties, it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.
Cooperative Extension
  • Coordinates with Elementary School counselors and administrators to present self-care education programs in classroom settings.
  • Works with community agencies and organizations to present youth education programs in after school settings.
  • Recruits and coordinates volunteer youth programs.
  • Maintains records of contact. Establishes relationship with community members by attending and participating in community events.

Head Start
  • Assists in developing, planning, and conducting educational developmentally appropriate activities for three to five year olds.
  • Assists in creating a warm, safe environment with appropriate teacher/child interactions.
  • Assists in all areas of classroom/center duties and shares responsibility of curriculum and activities implementation.
  • Maintains effective communication with parents and maintains children's confidential files.
  • Assists the teacher with home visitations
  • Assists with Kitchen and Bus Duty.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Youth & Family Services
  • Assists in developing, planning, and conducting educational activities and program for school-age youth as assigned by the Education Director.
  • Compiles data and reports on the educational progress of youth.
  • Assists in the coordination of education programs and activities with internal and external groups, including, but not limited to, other Youth and Family Services programs, county programs and services, public schools, behavioral health organizations, and school board administration.
  • Assists in all areas of classroom/center duties and assists with curriculum and activities planning and implementation.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Cooperative Extension - Graduation from high school or equivalent and two years of experience working with youth in an educational setting. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License and own a reliable source of transportation. Must use own vehicle for use on field trips for which compensation will be provided on a mileage basis. Must have flexibility to conduct evening and weekend programs as mandated by grant and in order to meet project goals.

Head Start - Associate Degree from an accredited institution in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or Pre-Kindergarten/Primary Education;
Or
Associate Degree from an accredited institution in a related field as defined by the Head Start Division and 6 credit hours in Early Childhood Education;
Or
Graduation from high school or equivalent and possess a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential.

Youth & Family Services Graduation from high school or equivalent and two years of experience in a youth educational setting. College degree in education may substitute for experience. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends. Must document competency with computer-based instruction or demonstrate advanced skill level with other software programs.
