MUSEUM CURATOR

FLSA Status: Exempt 

General Functions
   This is responsible work providing collections and/or educational services for the Orange County History Center.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Program Manager or their designee and is evaluated on accuracy, efficiency and achievement of desired results.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
   Duties will vary based on assignment.

Collections, Library and Archives
  • Directs and participates in daily collection management activities. Oversees the museum's custodial responsibilities in acquiring and preserving the objects including implementing methods for acquisitions, preservation and conservation of artifacts, art, photographs and documentary records.
  • Supervises database development of respective collections.
  • Plans and facilitates exhibitions, programs, classes and publications based on respective collections.
  • Cultivates relationships with federal, regional, state and other external agencies as well as donors and corporate relations.
  • Negotiates repository agreements and deeds of gift. Evaluates donations and acquisitions, administers loan agreements and ensures adherence to established policies.
  • Supervises Collections staff, volunteers, and interns.
  • Works with the marketing section to enhance awareness of museum collections with both internal and external audiences.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Public Programming
  • Develops and oversees History Center education and public programs.
  • Supervises Education and Public Programming staff, volunteers, and interns.
  • Establishes and maintains partnerships with community organizations throughout central Florida.
  • Creates and delivers education programs for special exhibits.
  • Works with the marketing section to enhance awareness of museum educational programming.
  • Oversees section budget and assists in budget preparation.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


  • Exhibitions
  • Assists in the creation of all exhibitions - from initial design concept, research and text writing, to layout, production, installation, and de-installation.
  • Assists in the creation of traveling and satellite exhibitions.
  • Manages and participates in daily exhibitions activities. Oversees the museum's custodial responsibilities in caring for permanent, temporary, and loaned exhibitions.
  • Plans and facilitates exhibit related programs, classes and publications.
  • Assists in the supervision of exhibitions staff, volunteers, and interns.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Collections, Library and Archives
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Museum Studies or a closely related field and three years of artifact conservation, preservation and/or museum programming experience.

Education and Public Programming
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in History, Education or a closely related field and three years of education program management experience.

Exhibitions
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Museum Studies or a closely related field and three years of exhibition development, design, and care experience.

Must have strong interpersonal, communication, organizational and prioritizing skills. Ability to work occasional nights and weekends. Valid driver's license and ability to provide own transportation.
 
Preferences
   Grant writing experience.

Collections, Library and Archives
Master's degree from an accredited institution in Museum Studies or related field. Historical anthropological knowledge of Florida and American material culture.

Education and Public Programming
Master's degree from an accredited institution in History, Education or closely related field.

Exhibitions
Master's degree from an accredited institution in Museum Studies or related field. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud Software, especially InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Creative, have good dexterity, and be able to complete intricate design and production work
