SHOP SUPERVISOR

General Functions
   The Shop Supervisor supervises the daily maintenance and repair of vehicles, apparatuses, and equipment that are owned and operated by Orange County Government. The Shop Supervisor is the primary point of contact for any advice or consultation regarding repair work and also handles the procurement of materials and goods needed to perform such work. Other functions include supervising shop personnel and skilled maintenance workers in the repair of vehicles and following shop safety standards and procedures.

Work is performed with independence under the direction of Assistant Manager/Battalion Chief. Performance is evaluated based on supervisory abilities, demonstrated mechanical skills and achievement of desired results, and timeliness of repairs.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Provide direction in the planning, organization, direction, scheduling, and coordination of shop operations for respective area of responsibility within the organization.
  • Provide technical and functional guidance and advice to subordinates with complex repair assignments; offer suggestions as to repair methods and tools; guide employees to proper service and technical bulletins.
  • Handle procurement responsibilities, including proper use of County issued PCard and ensuring purchasing guidelines for delivery orders (contracted items) and purchase orders (non-contracted items) are accurately met and completed, so as not to delay vehicle/equipment repairs or payments.
  • Compare price quotes and communicate with vendors and make payments on purchases, both contracted and non-contracted.
  • Communicate daily with management and customers concerning status of vehicles/equipment in the repair shop or at outside vendors; advise customers on repair options or issues when needed.
  • Complete annual employee performance evaluations for shop mechanics, automotive repair foremen, and/or fire rescue repair foremen. Dispense employee action plans and/or corrective action as needed.
  • Hire and train new employees in proper operational procedures and tasks, including use of all hand, power, and diagnostic tools. Must have knowledge and skill in the use of all hand and shop tools, including computerized diagnostic and hydraulic testing equipment (if applicable).
  • Keep accurate records of repair service; research technical bulletins and equipment repair literature; and follow all procedures and guidelines in an accurate and timely fashion.
  • Examine work areas for cleanliness and safety and monitor all safety equipment to ensure a safe work environment and that all machinery is in safe operating condition.
  • May be required to assist with repairs and/or provide adequate tools to perform mechanic’s duties as requested.
  • Analyze and scrutinize equipment replacement plans.
  • Review vehicle specifications and compare to organizational requirements.
  • Operate during critical or emergency periods (i.e. hurricanes, natural disasters, etc.) when needed.
  • Participate in pre-build meetings and scrutinize subtle changes, understanding repercussions resulting in changes.
  • Schedule and maintain training requirements for assigned technicians.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Graduation from high school or equivalent and six years of experience in repair of automotive, heavy equipment, and/or fire apparatus. Must possess 2 years of supervisory or lead experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

And

Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver’s License. May be required to possess and maintain the appropriate valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) for the type of equipment operated.
 
Preferences
   Vocational diploma in the field of automotive or diesel technology or Associate's degree from an accredited institution in automotive or diesel technology.

Recognized certifications from Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) or possess a competency certification in a related field (diagnostics, automotive or diesel mechanics, fuel system, hydraulic systems).

Possession of any ASE or EVT certifications.
