General Functions
   Performs skilled work operating medium to heavy sized automotive, construction or maintenance equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics of Work:

This is skilled work operating complex motor vehicles or equipment in the performance of assigned duties. An employee in a position assigned to this classification is responsible for safe operation of the vehicle or equipment. Responsibilities include performing routine safety checks and maintenance of the equipment as necessary. Work is assigned and reviewed by a designated supervisor. Performance is evaluated through observation of work in progress and upon completion for achievement of desired results in a safe, efficient manner.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Operates complex equipment such as, but not limited to, backhoe (equal or less than 20 foot reach), front end loader (equal or less than three yards), tandem dump truck, off-road dump truck, bulldozer, slope mower, side mower, batwing mower, asphalt distributor, finish asphalt roller, scraper pan, compactor, jetter, on-road tractor trailer, compost turner, water truck, self-loading sweeper, crane truck.
  • Performs grading operations according to engineering specifications.
  • Operates distributor to apply asphalt to road surface.
  • Operates roller to patch or pave road or other surfaces.
  • Exercises skills in manipulating equipment to properly perform tasks.
  • Drives on-road tractor-trailer to transport equipment to construction site.
  • Drives on-road tractor-trailer between transfer station and landfill.
  • Performs routine safety inspection of assigned equipment.
  • Performs minor maintenance duties to check oil, fuel, water and air as necessary, cleans and washes equipment.
  • May set up barricades and act as spotter or flagman.
  • Participates in general labor duties.
  • Performs other related work as required.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Three years experience in the operation and maintenance of medium to heavy automotive, construction or maintenance equipment.

Must be able to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Required to possess and maintain the appropriate valid Florida Commercial Driver's License for the type of equipment operated.

Based on area of assignment:
Required to possess (or obtain within six months of hire) the appropriate valid Florida Commercial Driver's License for the type of equipment operated.
