MAINTENANCE PERSON

General Functions
  

This key position performs unskilled or semi-skilled work in support of maintenance and construction tasks throughout County buildings, facilities, utilities, and grounds. Duties may include manual labor, assisting skilled trades, and operating equipment.

Work is performed under the general supervision of a designated supervisor. Work is reviewed in progress and upon completion.

 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  

Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties; it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.

  • Performs general maintenance and manual labor including clearing and digging ditches, spraying and trimming foliage/vegetation, cutting grass and weeds, planting and maintaining trees and shrubbery, trimming hedges, and raking leaves.
  • Assists skilled trades workers in areas such as carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing, and mechanics in maintenance, construction, and repair activities.
  • Uses and maintains various hand and power tools and equipment including concrete mixers, compressors, jack hammers, grinders, herbicide applicators, saws, welders, forklifts, tractors, and light construction or automotive equipment.
  • Fabricates, installs and repairs road signs, erects barricades, tacks reflectors onto barricades and assists in roadside maintenance such as patching asphalt and concrete.
  • Performs work in manholes, lift stations, trenches, and other confined spaces, using appropriate safety measures and equipment; operates mechanical sewer cleaning equipment as required.
  • Installs, removes, and repairs sewer pipes, water mains, valves, hydrants, and service lines; digs and back-fills at work sites.
  • Loads, unloads, and moves heavy materials, equipment, and large objects by hand or using machinery.
  • Drives and relocates light-duty vehicles and equipment to and from work sites.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and minor mechanical repairs on tools, pumps, motors, and generators; ensures tools and supplies are clean and properly maintained.
  • Maintains proper inventory and prepares vehicles or equipment with necessary materials for assigned tasks.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  

Depending on the area of assignment, must possess and maintain a Florida Commercial Driver’s License.

 
Preferences
  

Experience in a specific skill or trade such as carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing, and mechanics.

Knowledge of using simple equipment.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
