SURVEY TECHNICIAN

General Functions
   Performs a variety of skilled technical assignments using precise survey field instruments.

Distinguishing Characteristics of Work:

This is technical survey work performed in the office and/or field in connection with various engineering tasks.

An employee in a position assigned to this classification is responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of various surveying instruments including but not limited to theodolites, electronic distance meters, levels, total stations, electronic data collectors and global positioning receivers. Assumes limited duties of a party chief during brief periods of the party chief’s absence. Communicates surveying needs to superiors as necessary.

Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a survey party chief, which evaluates performance based on accuracy and technical knowledge demonstrated in performing assigned duties.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Performs angle measurements with theodolites.
  • Performs distance measurements with electronic distance meters.
  • Performs distance measurements with steel tapes.
  • Performs distance measurements by stadia.
  • Performs elevation measurements by differential leveling.
  • Performs elevation measurements by trigonometric methods.
  • Performs global positioning data acquisition.
  • Assists with the adjustment of various survey instruments.
  • Records data by electronic collector device.
  • Applies extensive knowledge of surveying field procedures utilizing various measurement techniques.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of civil engineering as it relates to surveying fieldwork.
  • Reads and interprets construction specifications and plans for survey related field staking.
  • Assumes some duties of the survey party chief as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Graduation from high school or equivalent and one year of appropriate survey related experience. Fifteen semester hours of college level training may be substituted for six months of the required experience, provided such training included six semester hours of survey related course work.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Operator’s license.

Must have the ability to work outdoors, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
