PUMP STATION OPERATOR

General Functions
   Operates pump stations and various control structures to maintain appropriate lake levels in the County’s primary water districts.

Distinguishing Characteristics of Work:

This is semi-skilled work in the inspection, operation and minor mechanical maintenance of pumps, control structures and related equipment essential to the operation of pump stations and dams in the primary water system. An employee in a position allocated to this classification is responsible for supervising and participating with a work crew in the inspection of these facilities to insure proper working conditions. Duties include starting and stopping pumps, testing water release gates and synchronizing pumping rates in order to maintain proper lake levels. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Water Management Coordinator who dispatches daily work orders and reviews work for achievement of desired results.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Inspects and operates County pump stations and control structures, both on private and public property, to insure they are in proper working order.
  • Performs minor mechanical maintenance on pump motors such as changing oil and various filters and routine lubricating.
  • Insures that pump stations have adequate fuel supply and that grounds are kept, including mowing lawns, mending fences and repairing or cleaning up any damage due to vandalism.
  • Keeps Water Management Coordinator informed of pump station and control structure conditions, reporting problems and any need for major repairs.
  • During emergency flood situations, insures that pumps and control structures are operating at appropriate capacity and kept free of debris so that lake levels can be raised and lowered at the rate prescribed by the Water Management Coordinator.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Graduation from high school combined with one year of experience in the actual operation of pump stations. Additional experience in which familiarity with water control structures and pump stations was acquired can be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
