SURVEY PARTY CHIEF I

General Functions
   Performs broad variety skilled, technical survey assignments of a responsible nature. Supervises assigned field crews.

Distinguishing Characteristics of Work:

This is advanced technical and supervisory work in the office and/or field in connection with various engineering tasks.

An employee in a position assigned to this classification is responsible for the direction of subordinate survey personnel in performing field survey functions including, but not limited to: boundary and right-of-way recovery, topographic data acquisition, recovery and establishment of County geodetic control points, construction layouts and measurements of engineering related structures. Uses data collection devices (i.e., electronic data collectors, field computers and field books) and makes elementary plane survey calculations. Communicates surveying needs to superiors as necessary.

Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a project manager, who evaluates performance based on accuracy and efficiency of operations and supervisory skills demonstrated.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Supervises assigned survey field crews.
  • Makes survey computations including level note reduction, traverse calculations, and calculations for construction layout.
  • Manages survey supply needs for assigned survey crew.
  • Adjusts survey instruments.
  • Make proper entries in survey field books and diaries.
  • Reads and interprets property descriptions, right-of-way maps and other engineering related blue prints.
  • Performs GPS data acquisition, topographic field surveys and boundary surveys.
  • Supervise the staking of parcels for court and appraisals and for jury viewing of potential right-of-way acquisitions.
  • Complies with all applicable Florida Department of Transportation safety procedures.
  • Demonstrates extensive knowledge of surveying operations and procedures and the principles, practices and techniques of field surveying.
  • Possesses a basic knowledge of mathematics through trigonometry and its application to surveying computations.
  • Possesses a considerable knowledge of civil engineering and construction specifications and plans related to field surveying.
  • Possesses knowledge of all necessary safety procedures and complies with Florida Department of Transportation regulations.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Graduation from high school or equivalent and three years of appropriate surveying experience, of which one year must be as a survey technician or equivalent position.

College level training may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester hours for each year of the required experience, provided such training included 12 semester hours of surveying related course work.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Operator’s license.

Must be able to work outdoors, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
