TRAFFIC ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN

General Functions
   Performs a variety of skilled assignments, including technical, surveying, and inspection and drafting duties in the transportation field.

Distinguishing Characteristics of Work:

This is skilled, technical work in Transportation/Traffic engineering, performed in the field and office.

An employee in a position allocated to this class is responsible for performing technical duties involving the application of moderately advanced engineering skills and techniques: varied and moderately difficult technical work in gathering, combining and analyzing traffic and roadway data; skilled work in a transportation engineering program, or technical drafting work in the preparation of plans, maps and other illustrative materials in topographic, aerial, civil engineering, traffic and transportation or related fields.

Assignments are performed under the general supervision of an assigned supervisor who reviews work while in progress and upon completion for achievement of desired results.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Operates surveying equipment to establish center lines and take cross sections, grades, and obtain other roadway geometric.
  • Performs transportation studies and traffic surveys in the field and office to obtain data for analysis.
  • Conducts technical surveys, such as, turning movement, multi-stop, delay, speed zone studies, and volume counts.
  • Travel County roads with an odometer-equipped vehicle, checking and plotting the exact location of all roads, cultural points and basic topographical features for the purpose of updating County maps.
  • Assists in video logging the County’s roadway system as directed.
  • Prepares traffic signal, signage and pavement marking layouts.
  • Reduces survey notes and plots and checks cross sections, center lines and grade; computes excavation and fill, percentage of grade and elevations; transfers proposed grades to cross section sheets and plots proposed templates.
  • Assists in preparing sketches and finished drawings and construction specifications for the construction of proposed new traffic improvements and roadway systems such as channelization layouts, signal designs, pavement marking and signing plans.
  • Performs simple transportation analysis calculation.
  • Operates data-collection instruments, apparatus and devices.
  • Enters complied data in computer for manual or automated analysis.
  • Assists in maintaining traffic related records and inventories such as: no parking zones, speed zones, traffic counts, turning movement counts, accident records, traffic signal, pavement marking, signage, school crossing layout plans.
  • Performs other related work as required.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Graduation from high school or equivalent and one year of related engineering experience. Thirty semester hours of college-level training may be substituted for the required experience, provided such training included twelve semester hours of engineering related course work.

Must possess and maintain a Florida Driver’s License. Must have basic computer operating knowledge.

Must be available to conduct traffic studies and surveys after normal office hours.

Will be required to work overtime as work schedules dictate.

Must possess physical stamina to work outdoors under adverse weather conditions.
