General Functions
   Performs a variety of routine assignments in the Public Works Department, including the least technical surveying, inspection and drafting duties.

Distinguishing Characteristics of Work:

This is routine work in connection with any branch of engineering performed in the field, office or laboratory.

An employee in a position allocated to this class is responsible for performing routine engineering duties using simple engineering practices and equipment, performing routine and repetitive work in gathering basic traffic data used in traffic forecasting and highway sufficiency ratings, performing routine duties in a sanitary engineering program or performing routine drafting work of limited difficulty.

Work is performed under the close and continuing supervision of a higher level technical employee.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Serves as a rodman and chainman on a survey party, clears brush, marks and drives stakes, takes simple notes, makes minor sketches, and cleans and cares for equipment.
  • Prepares test specimens, operates testing equipment, records results, and cleans and cares for equipment, assists in making routine field inspections on construction projects.
  • Sets, reads and resets traffic counting machines at predetermined locations on a strict time schedule, classifies traffic at pre-determined, semi-permanent locations according to type, direction of travel and time of day and collects other needed information. Serves as interviewer in an origin and destination survey.
  • Checks field rolls and books, computes elevations and plots cross sections and profiles, calculates earthwork quantities from templated cross sections and land areas for property descriptions. Performs simple plotting and inking of plan and profile sheets, draws and colors right-of-way plots.
  • Prepares simple sketches and drawings in connection with the construction of new buildings and the repair and alterations of existing structures. Prepares simple working drawings of mechanical, electrical and structural systems, equipment, and topographic and hydrographic surveys.
  • Performs related work as required.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Graduated from a High School or equivalent.

An equivalency diploma issued by a state department of education or by the United States Armed Forces Institute may be substituted for a high school graduation.

Some knowledge of simple engineering instruments, equipment and practices. Some knowledge of mathematics and engineering drawings. Some knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of engineering drafting and drafting instruments. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to obtain a Florida State Driver's License. Physical stamina to work outdoors, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
