LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt 

General Functions
   Responsible for laboratory testing and analysis in this assigned area. Requires extensive technical expertise to conduct analytical tests on samples and provide critical data and reports for the study.

Work requires judgment and is performed under the general supervision of the assigned supervisor. Work is evaluated for successful analysis of the samples.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Performs specific analytical/quality tests on samples.
  • Assists in sample collection, disposition and all custodial duties. Maintains inventory for all activities in the sample receiving section.
  • Calculates data from various analyses using approved quality control procedures.
  • Performs routine and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Maintains and supports the Laboratory records in accordance to regulatory agencies requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Utilities (Additional Duties)
  • Analytic review of organic, inorganic and microbiological data for adherence to state and NELAS requirements for data quality control and quality assurance.
  • Performs chemical analyses of water and solid samples using EPA – approved methods.
  • Communicates issues with project managers, laboratory section leaders and sample collectors.
  • Assists with Quality Assurance/ Quality Control data review of Wet Chemistry analyses.

    Mosquito Control (Additional Duties)
  • Receives processes and identifies adult and larval mosquitoes to genus and species using multiple taxonomic keys and reports results to manager.
  • Receives, processes and ships serum samples from the arbovirus disease sentinel flock to the Florida Department of Health Tampa Arbovirology Laboratory.
  • Identifies, processes and ships adult mosquito samples to the Florida Department of Health Tampa Arbovirology Laboratory for arborviral disease testing.
  • Age-grades selected adult mosquito populations and reports results to Manager.
  • Rears selected larval specimens to adult stage for confirmation identification.
  • Trains Mosquito Control Specialists to perform preliminary identification of adult and larval mosquitoes.
  • Provides live and prepared specimens for mosquitoes to assist public education efforts.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   High School diploma or equivalent and four years of experience in an analytical laboratory; or post secondary education can be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
 
Preferences
   Mosquito Control Experience utilizing dissecting and compound microscopes; use of a centrifuge.
