SENIOR CORRECTIONAL INVESTIGATOR

General Functions
   This position is responsible for organizing, directing and coordinating the efficient operation of the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU), which consist of certified and civilian staff members. Conducts high priority investigations of alleged criminal acts or acts of serious misconduct by Corrections Department employees.

Work is performed with independence under general supervision of the Internal Affairs Administrator. Performance is reviewed through conferences, records, reports and results achieved.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Supervises the daily functions and operations of the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) and coordinates the work assignments for investigative staff and prepares staff performance evaluations.
  • Provides training to investigative staff and assist them in conducting investigations, and recommends alternative techniques as necessary.
  • Conducts high priority investigations, has oversight or may conduct high media attention or potential litigation investigations.
  • Provides supervision of Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) incident reviews and investigations.
  • Reads and reviews all completed investigations, examining reports for proper format, accuracy, punctuation, thoroughness and completeness.
  • Plans, develops and coordinates covert operations to confirm or refute allegations of Corrections Department employees being involved in criminal activities, and records evidence using various surveillance equipment.
  • Provides recommendations to management regarding the selection of new members to the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) team.
  • Ensure the completion, review and distribution of the weekly tracking reports of outstanding and completed complaints/investigations.
  • Represents Department at various law enforcement meeting, court proceeding, and special investigative matters within and outside the County.
  • Acts as the Internal Affairs Administrator in his/her absence.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Psychology, Sociology or a related field and three years of responsible related investigative experience in the Criminal Justice field, to include one year of supervisory or lead investigative experience.

Must possess and maintain a State of Florida Correctional Officer certification within one year of employment

Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver’s license by date of hire

Must not have been convicted or plead no contest to a felony.

Must be able to be on-call during all shifts, weekends and holidays, as needed

Must provide own transportation to be utilized daily in the performance of assigned duties

Effective communicate skills both orally and in writing
 
Preferences
   Experience in internal affairs, fraud investigations, law enforcement investigation, or government compliance
