SELF CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS TECHNICIAN

General Functions
  

This key position performs technical work maintaining and repairing self-contained breathing apparatus, air cylinders, oxygen cylinders, masks, and air compressors owned by the Fire Rescue Department. Duties are performed in accordance with federal and state regulations.

Work is performed with independence under the supervision of the Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Shop Foreman after receiving oral instructions or written work orders as to the nature of the work to be performed. Performance is evaluated through observation and review of duties performed.

 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  

Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties; it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.

  • Conducts annual inspection on equipment to ensure safe operation.
  • Ensures integrity of cylinders.
  • Recharges SCBA air cylinders.
  • Recharges oxygen cylinders.
  • Conducts SCBA and high-efficiency particulate arresting (HEPA) mask fit testing.
  • Works in capacity of Foreman in his absence.
  • Performs computer data entry to establish and update files on SCBA and related equipment.
  • Repairs and calibrates atmospheric air monitors.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  

High school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience in mechanical repair. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.

May be required to possess and maintain the appropriate Commercial Driver’s License.

Must obtain all required repair technician certifications from the manufacturer of the SCBA equipment and air cylinders within six (6) months of hire.
