LIFE SAFETY EDUCATION SPECIALIST

General Functions
   Performs professional and technical duties in the development, implementation and delivery of life/safety education programs to the community, acts as liaison between the Fire/Rescue Division and the news media.

This is responsible professional work in the Life/Safety Education Unit of the Fire/Rescue Division. Duties include the development, implementation and delivery of life/safety education programs to the community. Exercises independent judgment based on professional skills. Responsibilities include preparing statistical reports concerning fire loss and EMS incidents for use in public education programs, and developing education/safety programs necessary for providing outreach programs to the public.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Unit Supervisor, who evaluates performance through conferences, reports, and results achieved.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Develops implements and delivers life safety education programs for citizens, to include elementary, intermediate and secondary school levels, special needs groups, and other community groups.
  • Coordinates intervention program with local juvenile justice authorities, human service agencies, school personnel, and mental health practitioners.
  • Provides assistance to station personnel in implementing community outreach programs.
  • Disseminates information to the news media regarding current activities as well as agency policies and practices.
  • Procures necessary equipment and supplies for program activities.
  • Assists in writing, editing and producing agency publications, including Division newsletter, news releases, life/safety publications, and articles for publication in national trade journals.
  • Plans media events to publicize activities of interest to press and community.
  • Conducts training on topics relating to life/safety education.
  • Responds to emergency fire and medical service requests as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, or one the social sciences and one year of progressively responsible experience in fire service or public administration.

Additional years above the required experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Post-graduate education in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Must possess Florida State Firefighter and E.M.T. certification.

Must obtain Officer Development Training Certification as specified and provided by Orange County Fire/Rescue Division within 18 months of employment.

  • Must possess and maintain Florida class "E" driver's license.


  • All qualifications must be met at time application is submitted, to include completion of probationary period in current position if Orange County employee.
