DEPUTY COUNTY ATTORNEY

General Functions
   Acts as surrogate County Attorney. Prepares memoranda for direct submission to county chairman, board of county commissioners, constitutional officers and county staff. Drafts ordinances, resolutions and administrative regulations. Serves as legal counsel in any lawsuit, appellate proceeding or administrative appeal. Performs administrative functions.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Prepares memoranda involving analysis and legal research.
  • Litigates as lead counsel in any lawsuit, appellate proceeding, or administrative appeal. Qualifies and recommends outside legal counsel and experts for retention, such as engineers, business damages analysts, economists, etc. Coordinates efforts of retained outside counsel/experts.
  • Recommends courses of action and/or settlement based on experience and professional judgment.
  • Attends, as senior legal counsel, meetings of advisory boards, county and state regulatory agencies, and the board of county commissioners to provide legal advice and assistance in policy formulation.
  • Reviews junior staff work product and professional performance. Provides sufficient counsel, advice and guidance to junior professional staff to ensure continued professional development and understanding of county policies, practices, procedures, and the interrelationship of the county with other segments of the community.
  • Acts as section chief, when so designated, functioning as liaison between county attorney and junior professional and clerical staff. Oversees work assignments within section and monitors for quantity and quality professional work product. Handles all complex or sensitive personnel and administrative problems occurring within the section.
  • Performs administrative duties, including, but not limited to, budget work-up, verifications, screening and recommendation of applicants for employment, approval of leave time and purchasing decisions.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Graduation from an accredited law school and possession of a Florida license to practice law. Eight (8) years of experience as an attorney. Two (2) years of this experience should be at the managerial or supervisory level.
