SENIOR ASSISTANT COUNTY ATTORNEY

General Functions
   Serves as legal counsel in any lawsuit, appellate proceeding or administrative appeal Prepares or complies memoranda for direct submission to County staff at all levels, and to the Mayor’s Office and the Board of County Commissioners. Drafts ordinances, resolutions and administrative regulations.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Prepares memoranda involving analysis, legal research, and application of thoroughly developed legal expertise. Requires sufficient knowledge of County practices, procedures and policy to accurately gauge impact on County’s fiscal status and policy objectives and to recommend appropriate course of action.
  • Negotiates transactions on behalf of the County. Reviews and/or prepares transaction and other related legal documents for the negotiations.
  • Provides legal counsel and transaction negotiation services at Department levels, Division level, County Administration, and Mayor’s staff, and when appropriate, the Board of County Commissioners. Services are provided though conferences, legal and/or transactional research, policy development efforts, and participation in meetings and negotiations with external management and administrators.
  • Litigates as lead counsel in any lawsuit, appellate proceeding and administrative appeals and serves as coordinator for retained outside counsel and experts. Qualifies and recommends outside legal counsel and experts for retention, such as engineers, business damage analysts, economists, etc.
  • Attends, as senior legal counsel, meetings of Advisory Boards, County and State regulatory agencies, and Board of County Commissioners for purpose of monitoring and/or providing legal advice.
  • Reviews junior staff work and performance and provides counseling, advice and guidance to junior staff to ensure continued professional development and adherence to County policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Graduation from an accredited law school, possession of a Florida license to practice law and minimum of eight years of experience as an attorney.
