General Functions
   Paraprofessional work assisting attorneys in the County Attorney's Office in providing legal services for Orange County. Assists attorneys through the performance of legal research, investigation of facts, and preparations of various legal documents to assist attorneys within the Orange County Attorney’s Office. Conducts legal research and the preparation and formatting of legal memoranda, pleadings, briefs and associated table of citations, leases, contracts, and other documents as may be assigned.

Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Senior Paralegal and an Attorney and is reviewed through meetings, conferences, reports, and results achieved.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Conducts statistical and documental research and factual investigations for review by the attorney.
  • Locates and interviews clients, witnesses, and other persons who may be affiliated with a particular case or matter.
  • Drafts legal documents including, but not limited to, complaints and various pleadings, responses to complaints and various pleadings, correspondence and other documents as requested by assigning attorneys.
  • Assists the attorneys by reviewing and drafting documents in preparation for depositions, hearings and trials.
  • Monitors legal time restrictions placed upon filings, answering and hearing of cases as instructed by the supervising attorney.
  • Performs legal research regarding court cases as well as general inquiries put forth to the County Attorney’s Office.
  • Assists the attorney in the review of complex contracts and miscellaneous legal documents to ascertain their accuracy and conformance to established policies and standards.
  • Assists the attorney in the preparation of lawsuits, trials and appeals, depositions, various court proceedings and administrative hearings by performing various tasks including, but not limited to, the preparation of pleadings, demonstrative evidence and exhibits, and various other legal documents from source materials for review by the assigning attorney.
  • Monitors and coordinates the progress of assigned cases with the supervising attorney.
  • Works with the attorney in coordinating and overseeing document production associated with assigned cases.
  • Oversees and supervises tasks assigned to legal secretarial staff and other clerical work associated with trial preparation or as otherwise assigned by the attorney.
  • Assists the attorney in preparation for and during trial of complex legal matters through coordination of exhibits and witnesses.
  • Analyzes data, prepares tables and graphs, and complies information and demonstrative evidence for trials for review and use by the attorney during trial, deposition, administrative hearing, or other court appearance or proceeding.
  • Assists with the interviewing and preparation of witnesses for depositions and trials.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Associate’s degree from an accredited institution in Paralegal studies or successful completion of the Certified Legal Assistant (CLA) examination of the National Association of Legal Assistants and three years of paralegal experience; or high school graduation or equivalent and five years of paralegal experience.

Must possess strong written communication skills and proficiency in word processing and Internet assisted legal research.
