FORENSIC SERVICES SUPERVISOR

General Functions
   Professional administrative work in the coordination of morgue activities including autopsy dissection, photography, evidence collection and processing, laboratory submissions and returns, x-ray processing, fingerprinting, and other related forensic practices. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Medical Examiner and Forensic Senior Program Manager and is reviewed through conferences, records, reports and results achieved.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Supervises and assists the forensic technicians, on-call forensic technicians, and the forensic evidence recovery technicians. Coordinates, schedules, and assigns work activities. Reviews completed work assignments, administers performance management and performance appraisals.
  • Oversees the preparation of tissue and bodily fluids for histological and toxicological examinations.
  • Verifies the quality control of each case and chain-of-custody in collection and submission of evidence, toxicology and histological submissions, photography, release of human remains, and release of personal effects.
  • Ensures the accuracy and quality of documents/computer entry work generated during the course of the examination or during the release of evidence, personal effects, or remains.
  • Enforces policies and procedures related to this type work as established by the office and must be able to write and enforce new policies when new forensic procedures are implemented.
  • Oversees and maintains all forensic equipment used in performance of duties in the morgue and is responsible for the inventory, upkeep, and maintenance of the evidence drying room, the medication inventory room, the personal effects room, the tissue storage room, and the anthropologic storage room and be responsible for the training of staff on the protocols for using each of those rooms.
  • Oversees and maintains the unidentified decedent case files and ensures all efforts are exhausted in attempting to get these cases identified.
  • Provides training in forensic procedures to staff, various law enforcement agencies, and educational institutions.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the field of forensic sciences and learn and implement the latest technologies and practices for forensic processing.
  • Assists with processing Records requests and filing when Records Coordinator is out of the office.
  • Assists the Chief Medical Examiner and Senior Program Manager with budgetary matters and planning. May purchase morgue supplies as needed.
  • Assists the Chief Medical Examiner and Senior Program Manager with any related duties as required.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Bachelor's or Master's Degree from an accredited institution in Criminal Justice/Forensics or closely related field and two years experience as a forensic/autopsy assistant, forensic recovery technician or a law enforcement position that handles evidence collection or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to work under adverse conditions.
 
Preferences
   Forensic/autopsy or forensic evidence recovery experience in a medical examiner/coroner office.
