LEAD MEDICOLEGAL INVESTIGATOR

General Functions
  

This position performs medicolegal death investigations on cases falling under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner as well as assigning cases and tasks performed by the team of medicolegal investigators.

Work is performed under the direction of the assigned manager and is reviewed for performance through reports and conferences.

 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  

Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties, it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.

  • Performs medicolegal death investigations to include the collection, examination, preservation, documentation, preparation, and/or analysis of the body, bodily tissues, bodily fluids, or physical evidence.
  • Assists in Quality Assurance/audit of all case reports for compliance with investigation policy and standards including identification status, next-of-kin communications, and resolution of final disposition.
  • Assists as intermediates in supervision of team members over 24-hour day of operations assigning cases and duties required to maintain National Association of Medical Examiners accreditation requirements.
  • Assists in training new investigators including field training period and ongoing American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) registry requirement.
  • Acts as official representative of medical examiner in record review discussions and conferences with other agencies and giving depositions and courtroom testimony.
  • Takes initial death reports and conducts initial investigation to determine if case falls under jurisdiction of the medical examiner.
  • Photographically documents the scene and body location, prepares sketches of body and its relationship to the scene, and coordinates transportation of the deceased to the morgue.
  • Elicits pertinent past and present history from persons associated with deceased, including family, physicians, and law enforcement personnel.
  • Attends various training programs to maintain high standards and implement new methods of investigation.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  

Associate degree from an accredited institution in Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, or a closely related Field and four (4) years of medicolegal death investigative experience at a medical examiner's office or coroner's office.

Must possess and maintain ABMDI (American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators) certification.

 
Preferences
  

Proficient in Microsoft Office.
