PPE TECHNICIAN

General Functions
   This position will be responsible for ensuring compliance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards as it pertains to firefighting protective ensembles. The role is responsible for annual inspections and cleanings, as well as standard repair requirements. This position will be required to train personnel on the proper gross decontamination process and standard requirements.

Work is performed with considerable independence under direct supervision. Work is evaluated through timeliness, observation, and reports on compliance with NFPA standards.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Cleans and inspects firefighting protective ensemble for serviceability according to national standards.
  • Repairs firefighting protective ensemble for serviceability according to national standards.
  • Researches new trends in care and service of firefighting protective ensemble.
  • Researches, determines causes, and provides recommendations to prevent premature failure of firefighting protective ensemble.
  • Ensures firefighters are properly sized/fitted in firefighting protective ensemble such that the firefighter can perform assigned duties safely.
  • Responsible for training/educating firefighters on the general inspection and gross decontamination procedures for firefighting protective ensemble with accordance of national standards.
  • Responsible for annual inspections and/or decontamination of gear.
  • Participates in committee to review current and future specification requirements set for firefighting protective gear.
  • Maintains knowledge of current and future national standards for protective ensembles.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   High School graduate or equivalent.
 
Preferences
   6 months of experience in cleaning and inspecting firefighting protective ensemble.
