General Functions |
|
This key position performs skilled and highly complex welding work following accepted standards and techniques along with using acetylene and/or electric arc welding equipment to fuse or cut metallic articles, parts or materials. Responsibilities include: laying out, cutting and fitting materials for welding. Work involves the application of trade skills to a wide variety of welding, brazing and metal cutting jobs on ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Considerable latitude is exercised in determining the methods used and results obtained. Work may be from sketches, diagrams or blueprints and may involve working with broken parts. Supervises lower level Welders to ensure quality requirements are met.
Work is performed under the supervision of an assigned supervisor and is reviewed through meetings, conferences, reports, and results achieved. |

Representative Duties /Assignments |
|
Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties, it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.
- Preheats and cleans metals; lays out, cuts and fits materials for welding.
- Selects proper welding heat and proper type and size of electrodes for correct penetration and strength of welded metals.
- Cuts and welds machinery and equipment parts such as: truck and automobile bodies; steam and plumbing systems; pump and engine parts; trailer parts and heavy equipment.
- Performs skilled welding in the manufacture of special machinery and apparatus for firefighting, tree lifting and general public works.
- Performs flat, vertical and horizontal welding.
- Brazes, solders and coats non-ferrous metals; performs silver and lead soldering.
- May perform blacksmithing, such as manufacturing eyebolts, braces, angle brackets and similar items.
- Drives a truck towing portable welder and acetylene burning/welding equipment to field sites to repair heavy equipment.
- Conducts proper equipment maintenance and makes minor repairs to welding equipment.
- Orders materials to complete specific jobs.
- Determines approximate cost of labor and materials to specific jobs.
- Oversees and supervises Welders I and II by providing guidance and ensuring compliance with safety standards, project specifications, and quality requirements.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications |
|
High school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of experience as a welder, one (1) year of which may be vocational or technical training in welding. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License. |

Preferences |
|
Vocational or technical school as a welder.
Certifications to perform any of the following: Vertical Welding, Horizontal Welding, Flat Welding, “TIG” welding in all positions, “STICK” welding in all positions, Aluminum in all positions, or Standard steel in all positions. |
