General Functions |
|
This key position performs semi-skilled repairs, maintenance, construction, and inspection of traffic signal systems and equipment.
Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Signal Shop Supervision staff and is reviewed through meetings, conferences, reports, and results achieved.

Representative Duties /Assignments |
|
Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties; it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.
- Installs detection, communication, and signal cable (overhead/underground).
- Performs installation, identification, preventative maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of signal equipment.
- Programs signal control equipment; compiles data reports and performs conflict monitor testing.
- Operates hand/power tools and diagnostic equipment.
- Operates lifts, bucket trucks, auger trucks, cranes, forklifts, or trenchers.
- Completes field reports, materials records, and service paperwork.
- Escorts house/structure movers.
- Assembles/repairs signal heads and hardware in the shop.
- Cleans, paints and refurbishes traffic signal components as well as maintain material inventory.
- Builds, modifies, and tests cabinets for warning/special signals.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications |
|
High school diploma or equivalent, documented completion of vocational training in construction, electricity, or electronics, and one (1) year of experience in electronics and/or traffic signal technology. An additional year of the specified experience may be substituted for the vocational training.
In lieu of the required experience, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
Must possess and maintain the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Level I and Level II certifications.
Must possess and maintain certification by the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) for Work Zone Safety or State Maintenance of Traffic Training. |

Preferences |
|
Must pass the Traffic Signal Technician II written and skills tests at 70% or greater.
Ability to read and interpret schematics and/or blueprints.
Ability to troubleshoot electrical and electronic circuitry.
Basic computer skills to include utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, and email software.
Knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the Florida Department of Transportation standards, and specifications relating to the traffic-engineering field. |
