TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECH I

General Functions
  

This key position performs skilled repairs, maintenance, construction, and inspection of traffic signal systems and equipment.

Work is performed with considerable independence and the exercise of independent judgment under the general supervision of the Signal Shop Supervision staff. Performance is reviewed through observations, reports, and results achieved.

 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  

Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties, it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.

  • Responds to signal malfunctions; diagnoses and repairs or replaces defective traffic signal components.
  • Installs detection, communication, and signal cable for traffic systems, including fiber optic and vehicle detection technology.
  • Performs identification, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting of traffic signal systems and infrastructure.
  • Programs controllers; gathers data from control equipment and performs conflict monitor testing.
  • Operates hand and power tools, including drills, voltmeters, saws, and sealant applicators.
  • Operates aerial lifts, auger trucks, cranes, forklifts, and trenchers.
  • Completes field service reports detailing repairs, failures, and time/materials usage.
  • Assembles and repairs signal heads and electrical components in the shop environment.
  • Designs and builds custom detector and speed-warning cabinets; creates schematics for future use.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  

High school diploma or equivalent, documented completion of vocational training in construction, electricity, or electronics, and three (3) years of experience in the traffic signal field. An additional year of the specified experience may be substituted for the vocational training.

In lieu of the required experience, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.

Must possess and maintain certification by the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Level I, Level II Certifications and for Work Zone Safety or State Maintenance of Traffic Certification.

 
Preferences
  

Must pass the Traffic Signal Technician III written and skills tests at 70% or greater.

Ability to read and interpret schematics and/or blueprints.

Ability to troubleshoot electrical and electronic circuitry.

Basic computer skills to include utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, and email software.

Knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the Florida Department of Transportation standards, and specifications relating to the traffic-engineering field.
