SIGNAL CONSTRUCTION TECH

General Functions
   Performs skilled technical work in the installation of traffic signal devices and systems, signs and operation of construction vehicles and equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics of Work

This is skilled, technical work involving the installation of traffic control devices and systems. An employee in this classification is responsible for construction and installation of traffic signal controls and systems.

Independent judgment is exercised in the technical aspects of work assignments and work is reviewed upon completion for compliance with instructions and regulations. Work is reviewed and monitored by Traffic Signal Shop Supervisor and/or Foreman.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Constructs and installs traffic signal controller cabinets, foundations, poles, aerial cables, conduit and conductors, detector loops and signal assemblies.
  • Assists with construction of school crossing flashers and other warning devices.
  • May escort and assist house movers on public roads in the County.
  • Assists in the installation of overhead signs when required.
  • Operates bucket truck, pavement saw, hydraulic jack and bore equipment, loop sealant equipment, auger.
  • Required to respond to emergency calls relative to traffic signal malfunctions.
  • Performs related work as required.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   High school graduate or equivalent, completion of vocational training in construction, electricity or electronics and two years experience in the traffic signal field. An additional year of the specified experience can be substituted for the vocational training.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial class License with airbrakes.

Must be willing to work overtime, be on standby and on call as directed by Traffic Signal Shop Supervisor and/or Foreman.

Must complete certification for the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) for Work Zone Safety or State Maintenance of Traffic Training and be certified in (IMSA) Traffic Signal Level I.

Must successfully complete a skills test to include: work zone setup, basic controller cabinet setup and proper equipment use of lift and/or bucket truck, hand and power tools and test equipment.
 
Preferences
   Certification in the operation of aerial bucket/auger equipment.
