General Functions |
|
This key position is a highly skilled role that performs mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of automotive, construction trailers, emergency apparatus, and heavy equipment. Leads lower-level mechanics.
Work is performed with considerable independence and the exercise of independent judgment under the general supervision of the department manager or other designated supervisor. Performance is reviewed through observations, reports, and results achieved. |

Representative Duties /Assignments |
|
Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties; it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.
- Leads, mentors, and trains other mechanics.
- Plans assignments and schedules work to be performed to ensure efficient shop operation and proper field repairs.
- Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs systems and equipment.
- Maintains service logs and shop inventory.
- Inspects work and test drives vehicles.
- May serve as Acting Shop Supervisor in the absence of the Senior Foreman/ Shop Supervisor.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications |
|
High school diploma or equivalent and six (6) years of automotive or diesel mechanic experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
Depending on the area of assignment, must possess and maintain a Florida Commercial Driver's License; or obtain within one (1) year of hire.
Must possess four (4) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications; and obtain Master Level Certification within two (2) years of hire.
Fire Fleet Operations
Three (3) of the six (6) years of mechanic experience must be working with fire fleet equipment. |

Preferences |
|
Associate's degree from an accredited institution in automotive or diesel mechanics.
Recognized dealership or competency certifications in a related field such as diagnostics, automotive or diesel mechanics, fuel system, or hydraulic systems. |
