AUTOMOTIVE MACHINIST

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt 

General Functions
   Performs skilled machinist and metal work in the fabrication, repair and alternation of major vehicle assemblies and specialized machinery. Develops specifications from general description, schematic or sketch to manufacture needed part or specialty tool. Designs fixtures, tooling and experiential parts to meet department needs.

Work is performed under direct supervision from the Senior Forman or assigned supervisor after receiving oral instructions or written work orders as to the nature of the work to be performed. Performance is evaluated through observation and review of tasks performed.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Manages set-up and operation of fabricating machines such as brakes, cutters, rolls, drill presses, end mill, edge planer and shears.
  • Calculates and set controls needed to regulate speed, feed, depth and angle of fabricated part according to guidelines and procedures.
  • Locates, measures and marks dimensions of part using micrometer, calipers, squares, gauges and rulers.
  • Verifies conformance part to specifications, using measuring and inspection tools.
  • Monitors machine operation to detect malfunction or out of tolerance machining. Adjusts machine controls and verify accuracy of settings.
  • Dismantles machines and equipment to examine parts for defects and replace as needed. Performs routine preventive maintenance on machines as required.
  • Studies sample parts, blueprints, drawing and engineering applications to determine the need for fabricated parts. Designs and construct templates and fixtures needed to complete the repair.
  • Confers with internal/external customers to ensure needed specifications are met. Provide technical and functional guidance to the customers.
  • Ensures safe work practices are followed and area is maintained in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   High school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience in the machinist repair field or two years with machinist certification.

Must provide adequate tools to perform Automotive Machinist's duties as required
 
Preferences
   Vocational Training in Machining, Welding and Fabrication
