General Functions |
|
This key position is a skilled role that performs mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of automotive, construction trailers, emergency apparatus, and heavy equipment.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Shop Supervisor or assigned supervisor. Performance is reviewed through observations, reports, and results achieved. |

Representative Duties /Assignments |
|
Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties; it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.
- Performs advanced diagnostics, repairs, and overhauls on automotive, construction trailers, emergency apparatus, and heavy equipment.
- Diagnoses and repairs complex electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
- Fabricates or modifies specialized tools and equipment as needed.
- Conducts performance tests and quality control inspections on repaired equipment.
- Analyzes technical manuals and diagrams to perform complex repairs.
- Trains and mentors lower-level mechanics.
- Maintains detailed records of repairs, parts usage, and maintenance history.
- Ensures compliance with applicable safety standards, codes, and regulations.
- Operates tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Fleet Management -Supply (Field Services)
- Procures parts, establishes inventory and reconciles purchases made on the County's Purchasing Card.
- Provides technical and functional guidance to equipment and vehicle operators.

Minimum Qualifications |
|
High school diploma or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in automotive, heavy equipment, or emergency apparatus maintenance and repair. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
Depending on area of assignment, must possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License; or obtain within one (1) year of hire.
Must possess two (2) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications and obtain a third (3) certification within two (2) years of hire. |

Preferences |
|
Associate's degree from an accredited institution in automotive or diesel mechanics.
Recognized dealership or competency certifications in a related field such as diagnostics, automotive or diesel mechanics, fuel system, or hydraulic systems. |
