General Functions
   This position performs semi-skilled work in assisting experienced skilled trade’s employees and technicians.

Distinguishing Characteristics of Work

This is a semi-skilled work assisting experienced workers in the various skilled trades and technical work.

An employee in a position assigned to this class assists a higher level employee and receives on-the-job training for one of the skilled trades. Duties include assisting with complex construction repair and maintenance work and performing some routine related tasks. Duties also include cleaning tools and work areas, hauling materials and necessary supplies and performing other related functions in assisting a higher level trades employee.

Work is performed under the general supervision of an assigned supervisor or foreman on routine assignments and close supervision is received while performing more difficult work. Work is reviewed in progress and upon completion.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
   Based on area of assignment:
  • Serves as a semi-skilled apprentice to assist technicians, journeyman and master level trades workers.
  • Learns the proper use of tools and equipment to become proficient in a trade or specialized work area.
  • Uses hand and power tools in performing job duties. Equipment which may be used include: drill press, die cutter, electric drill, radial saw, band saw, skill saw, welding torch, heat lamp applicator, herbicide applicator, concrete mixer, compressor, jack hammer, grinder, pipe threader, fork-lift, air boat, tractor, automotive and construction equipment.
  • Assists skilled workers in areas such as: herbicide sprays, sign fabrication, welding, masonry, and carpentry, plumbing or electrical trades, mechanical repair, general maintenance and construction.
  • Fabricates reflective street signs.
  • Mixes and applies herbicides to vegetation.
  • Mixes mortar and concrete; assists in laying brick and block.
  • Repairs water mains, valves, hydrants and service lines.
  • Digs and back-fills dirt at water and sewer line locations.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and minor mechanical repairs on pumps, generators and motors.
  • Assures necessary supplies and equipment are available on a vehicle or at work site.
  • Cleans and checks tools, equipment and supplies to assure all items are maintained in proper working order.
  • Moves and relocates trucks and equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and one (1) year of experience in a specific skill or trade based on area of assignment.

May be required to possess and maintain the appropriate valid Commercial Driver’s License for the type of equipment operated.
