MEDICAL LABORATORY SPECIALIST

General Functions
   The responsibility of this position is to collect and conduct laboratory testing of inmate body fluids for the purpose of diagnosis of medical problems as well as screening for illegal drug use and alcohol. Information secured will be used for diagnosis, prevention and or treatment of disease.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
   Duties may vary based on area of assignment.


  • Performs serology, immunology, hematology, bacteriology, urinalysis, drug susceptibility and other testing.
  • Performs phlebotomies.
  • Collects body fluids for laboratory tests to provide information for diagnostic treatment.
  • Trains and certifies staff on the proper procedures for collecting urine specimens and completing the chain of evidence form.
  • Verifies and certifies as accurate all testing results and reports.
  • Maintains accurate records on all test results, test reports, chain of evidence forms and other testing documentation.
  • Reviews the chain of evidence forms received from the detention facilities and work release center for accuracy and proper documentation of collected urine and other laboratory procedures.
  • Develops and implements quality control procedures to ensure the proper operation and management of the department's laboratory.
  • Provides routine intake procedures, to include vital signs and form preparation.
  • Administers minor first aid and other minor treatments under supervision.
  • Assists in data entry, patient scheduling, and statistic collection for census and services provided.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Medical Services - High school diploma or equivalent and three years of experience in a laboratory environment.

Investigative Services - High school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in laboratory environment.

Medical Services - Must have certification in phlebotomy and CPR prior to start date. Investigative Services - Must successfully obtain drug-tester certification within six months from date of hire.
 
Preferences
   Investigative Services - Experience as Medical Assistant.
