ASSISTANT TO CHIEF OF CORRECTIONS

General Functions
  

The overall function of the Assistant to the Chief is to support the Chief and the Corrections Management Team in resolving operational issues through various investigative projects in the jail. The role will be responsible for providing administrative, analytical and technical support to the Chief of Corrections in dealing with short term and long term issues at the detention facility regarding inmates and or facility. The role requires research to prepare responses for the Chief on a variety of items, and acts as an intermediary for community/outside agencies and internal staff concerns.

Work is performed with considerable independent judgment and self-initiative under general supervision of the Chief of Corrections.

 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Serves as an advisor to the Chief of Corrections on general management/operations of the Correctional facility. Provides support in resolving operational issues by leading and coordinating projects.
  • Supervises the Corrections Risk Management Analyst and plans and reviews all or portions of project investigations. Assists with creating action plans for limiting potential liability.
  • Review the analysis and measurement of risk exposures by researching operations of the department and/or ensuring physical inspections are successfully completed and coordinate safety visits as necessary.
  • Conducts investigations and inquiries inside of low, medium and high-security detention facilities, regarding inmates and/or facility.
  • Interviews inmates, witnesses and employees to gather evidence and facts related to alleged violations of Department policies and procedures.
  • Acts as principal liaison for various divisions that report to the Chief of Corrections, and other outside agencies and organizations; conducts research on the issues, reviews and analyzes technical reports to provide timely and accurate responses to citizens, elected officials, legislators, community leaders, the media and County staff.
  • Provides support and assistance to the Chief of Corrections regarding oversight responsibilities for the various divisions, manages, directs and coordinates matters relating to the Corrections Recruitment Team and the Corrections Honor Guard; directs and oversees the activities of personnel assigned to the Chief's Office.
  • Provides operational and technical advice and recommendations to ensure that the facility operates in compliance with Federal, State and local mandates concerning specific issues.
  • Reviews and participates in Union related matters; reviews uses of force reports and informs the Chief of Corrections of any violations; reviews complaints for appropriate referral to the responsible manager; reviews risk management reports to ensure the proper adherence to policies.
  • Reviews internal reports and consults with the Chief of Corrections on matters of departmental concerns; initiates recommendations, assists in the development, and implementation of policies and procedures for the department.
  • Reviews responses to Public Records Request. Assist with monitoring and coordinating of future Capital Improvement Projects.
  • Reviews and monitors the budgets for the department and its divisions reporting to the Chief of Corrections in preparation for bi-annual budget and budget work sessions; participates on committees, councils and boards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and six years of experience in Corrections, Criminal Justice or other related field or Associate's degree and eight years of experience. Four of the six years of experience must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • Must possess and maintain State of Florida Correctional Officer certification within first year of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Class E Driver's License.
  • Must be able to work all shifts, weekends and holidays and be on-call 24/7.
