COMMUNICATIONS ASSISTANT

General Functions
  

This is an entry-level communications and/or public relations position that supports professional level positions such as a Public Information Officer or communications and event teams.  The role is an integral part of the County’s communications efforts to promote programs and events to Orange County citizens

Work is performed under the general direction of the assigned supervisor. Performance is evaluated on accuracy, efficiency and achievement of desired results

 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  

 Duties may vary based on area of assignment:

 Provides communications and or public relations supports to professional level positions such as a Public Information Officer or communications and event teams. 

  • Provides communications assistance, such as research, writing, fact checking, coordination of production of event graphics, photography, etc.
  • Assist with news media monitoring and distribution of reports; interacts with news media that request information and coordinates a response.
  • Provide support with the production and distribution of internal and external communications.
  • Collects and complies information for the use of maintaining policies, reports and meetings.
  • Provides budget management, maintains and tracks monies spent by department, processes and researches purchase orders and card statements.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Based on the nature of the work and assignment, may be required to work weekends, nights and holidays.

 Communications

  • Assists with the implementation of a unified social media strategy to elevate the visibility of the Mayor of Orange County, creating brand awareness while increasing an online audience.
  • Covers various community functions and writes stories for multiple communication outlets, including the newsroom, newsletters and social media posts.
  • Participates in emergency activities and responses and collaborates with ESF-14 team during EOC activations.

Event Coordination

  •  Assists with the development and coordination of high profile special events and large community events involving the Mayor and/or the Orange County Board of County Commissioners.
  • Assists with signature events and special projects, such as the State of the County and the Economic Summit as well as the Board of County Commission meetings and other special meetings. Special projects include the Mayor's Coffees, the Mayor's Annual Toy Drive and several parades.
  • Assists as needed with coordinating speakers, event registration and catering orders, setup and clean-up, and other logistics for events and programs.
  • Provides appropriate measurements regarding event success.

 TV

  •  Assists with database management for on-air broadcast insertion system.
  • Assists with video productions and tape duplications; maintains video library archives.
  • Assists with sorting tapes and providing maintenance of programming content. 

Corrections Communications

  • Coordinates all tours within the Corrections Department. 
 
Minimum Qualifications
  
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Communications, Journalism, Hospitality, Marketing, Public Relations or a closely related field or an equivalent of relevant education, training or experience.
  •  Must be proficient in using Microsoft Word, Publisher and PowerPoint.
 
Preferences
  

 Orange TV – Experience in television operations, traffic programming or broadcasting inventory control
