DIRECTOR OF LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS

General Functions
   This position is responsible for lobbying and administrative work in planning, organizing and directing activities that advocate the County's position at all jurisdictional levels as instructed by the Mayor and County Administration.

Work is performed independently with general supervision by the Chief of Staff. Performance is reviewed periodically through conferences and written reports.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Assists in identifying and prioritizing policy issues and projects for inclusion in the County's legislative and appropriations programs.
  • Prepares proposed countywide federal and state legislative priorities for presentation to the County Administrator's Office and the Mayor's Office.
  • Confers with legislators and officials to emphasize supposed weaknesses or merit of specific bills to influence passage, defeat or amendment of measures more favorable to Orange County.
  • Studies proposed legislation to determine possible effects on Orange County; contacts groups having similar interest to encourage them to contact legislator and present views.
  • Lobbies for favorable policies and programs that protect the interest of the citizens and government of Orange County.
  • Promotes the County's legislative policy during State and federal legislative sessions.
  • Develops and maintains meaningful professional contacts with local, regional, state and federal appointed and elected officials.
  • Responds to legislative inquiries by the Mayor, County Commission, the County Administrator and County agencies, as well as other elected and appointed officials. Serves as a public information resource to citizens seeking information on legislative matters.
  • Coordinates the County's involvement with national and statewide organizations, public interest groups, chambers of commerce, civic organizations, and the community.
  • Presents before the Board of County Commissioners on issues as they relate to state and federal legislative matters.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Public and Business Administration, Political Science, or a closely related field and minimum of five (5) years experience in legislative, government and/or public affairs..
 
Preferences
   Experience in government affairs or lobbying activities with the State of Florida legislature.
