GIS SPECIALIST

General Functions
  

This is a professional technical position responsible for carrying out the implementation and enhancement of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data, applications and processes based on specified requirements. The position maintains GIS data and metadata, creates mapping, performs quality assurance functions, and assists with the preparation of specifications for new GIS data/applications/processes.

Work is performed under the general direction of the GIS Supervisor. Performance is reviewed through observations, reports and achievement of desired results.

 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  

Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties, it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.

  • Proficiently uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software to maintain GIS layers, perform basic GIS analysis, and plans, documents, analyzes, and develops GIS projects as assigned.
  • Conducts land record research, reads legal land descriptions, and reviews plats and as-builts to support GIS production and project activities.
  • Digitizes GIS features and geo-rectifies images, engineering plans, and plats to support GIS maintenance processes.
  • Researches, consults, and analyzes various data sources to improve the quality of GIS data.
  • Produces mapping using GIS and graphics software following customer requirements.
  • Provides basic GIS training to business users.
  • Interacts regularly with other Orange County agencies and other local governments.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  

Associate’s degree from an accredited institution and three (3) years of experience demonstrating knowledge of the use and application of GIS data and technologies; or an equivalent combination of education, training or experience. A Bachelor’s degree or other high level degree may substitute for two (2) years of experience.

 
Preferences
  

Experience with GIS technologies, data and systems for supporting critical County business areas.

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
