(BUSINESS UNIT) DATA NETWORK SPECIALIST

FLSA Status: Exempt 

General Functions
   Performs technical and administrative tasks maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing computer hardware and software components and communication systems, to support the performance and integrity of the Orange County Advance Traffic Management System's data communications network. Plans, designs, installs and maintains the County's Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) and Fiber Optic Wide Area Network (WAN).
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Performs installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of data communication hardware and software components.
  • Troubleshoots various video equipment, Dynamic Message Signs, and network equipment.
  • Configures and trouble-shoot routers, switches, and other associated equipment.
  • Recognizes, evaluates, diagnoses and corrects system and network operating problems.
  • Assists in the analysis, design and implementation of data communication network configurations. Monitors system performance and recommends performance improvements.
  • Develops and maintains current drawings and specifications related to all data communications components and circuits.
  • Tests and schedules all changes in a manner that will be error-free, well communicated and not impact the production environment adversely.
  • Provides problem determination, resolution and documentation services.
  • Identifies and reports information security violations.
  • Assists other work areas in the development of effective network utilization practices.
  • Performs the testing, evaluating and recommendation of vendor provided data communications software and/or hardware problems.
  • Recommends and develops standards and procedures. Designs and develops operational procedures for the use of data network hardware and/or software components.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Math, Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field and two years of network software programming experience, or data network maintenance, design or installation experience. Additional years of the specified experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.
 
Preferences
   Hardware Skills - Knowledge of Routers, Switches, Hubs, digital DSU/CSU, and Gigabit Ethernet fiber-optic networks.

Software skills - Knowledge of current Microsoft Operating Systems including Microsoft Office, Solarwinds, and other network troubleshooting software.
