ENGINEERING INSPECTOR I

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt 

General Functions
   Performs inspections of assigned projects for the Public Works Division. This is skilled technical work performed under field conditions. An employee assigned to this classification is responsible for performing a wide variety of inspections in the civil engineering and construction field to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, codes and other applicable regulations.

Work is performed with some independence under the general supervision of the assigned supervisor.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
   Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties, it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.
  • Receives and responds to public inquiries and/or requests regarding inspections specific to the division to be conducted.
  • Manage and track a project list of activities to be completed
  • Interprets approved plans, specifications and regulations and applies them during field inspections.
  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Roads & Drainage
  • Performs inspections of roadway construction activities and materials to ensure full compliance with approved plans and specifications.
  • Performs daily inspection of term contracts for services such as right-of-way and secondary canal mowing, underdrain installation, sidewalk repairs, street sweeping, road resurfacing, and other inspections as assigned
  • Determines quantities for materials used and amount of work completed.
  • Ensures public safety and traffic management at construction sites.
  • Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits various records and reports, including engineering drawings, photographs, contracts and agreements, technical reports, invoices, billing statements, change order requests, project diary, memos and correspondence.

  • Traffic
  • Read plans, sketches or maps to determine where and what types and locations of signs to be installed.
  • Performs periodic inspection of traffic signs in a defined area to identify those that may need to be replaced or maintained based on minimum retro-reflectivity standards and/or damage.
  • Records field measurements of sign locations, including geo-locates, and creates existing conditions diagrams.
  • Reviews contractor installed traffic signs in the right of way per plan and develops a punchlist of work that needs to be addressed by the contractor.
  • Inspects the installations of new signs, pavement markings and existing No Parking signs in a subdivision.
  • Inspects the installation of new signs, pavement markings, new sidewalk and curb ramps according to plans and ADA requirements, and school zone beacons associated with new school construction.
  • Assists the sign installation foreman with creating utility locate tickets.

 
Minimum Qualifications
  

Graduation from high school or equivalent and two years of engineering or construction experience (type of experience will be specified by department); or an equivalent combination of education, training or experience.  

Mandatory Special Requirement

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's license.

Based on area of assignment maybe required to satisfactorily complete the Contracts Underground Utility Examination for Inspector within two years of hire date.

 
Preferences
  

Traffic

  • Familiar with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) as it relates to roadway signing and sign placement.
  • Possess an IMSA Signs and Pavement Markings Technician Level I.  Required to obtain an IMSA Signs and Pavement Markings Technician Level II within 12 months of hire. 

Roads & Drainage

  • Knowledge of FDOT standards and regulations
