General Functions
   Performs a variety of routine skilled assignments, including technical surveying, inspection and drafting duties.

Distinguishing Characteristics of Work:

This is skilled technical work in connection with any branch of engineering performed in the field, office or laboratory.

An employee in a position allocated to this class is responsible for performing technical duties involving the application of moderately advanced engineering skills and techniques, performing varied and moderately difficult technical work in gathering, combining and analyzing traffic and roadway data. Performs technical drafting work in the preparation of plans, maps and other illustrative materials in architectural, mechanical, electrical, topographic, hydrographic, civil engineering or related fields.

Assignments are performed under the general supervision of a higher level technical employee who normally reviews work while in progress and upon completion for desired results.

Supervision is received from a higher grade employee and work is reviewed in progress and by results achieved.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Operates transit and level on field survey crews in establishing lines, taking cross sections and running drainage areas and transverses.
  • Makes field and laboratory tests and obtains representative samples of construction materials for testing laboratory.
  • Inspects grading work for proper materials, moisture content, width, grade and drainage, inspects surfacing work for proper width, depth, mixture and amount of material. Inspects construction of structures for proper alignment, grade and reinforcement.
  • Conducts turning movement, stop and delay and/or speed zone studies, travels County roads with an odometer-equipped vehicle checking and plotting the exact location of all roads, cultural points and basic topographical features for the purpose of updating County maps. Designs simple channelizations or assists a signal layout designer with complicated signal and channelization layouts.
  • Reduces survey notes and plots and checks cross sections, centerlines and grade, computes excavation and fill percentage of grade and evaluations, transfers proposed grades to cross section sheets and plots proposed templates.
  • Prepares sketches and finished drawings in connection with the construction of new buildings and the repair and alterations of existing structures.
  • Prepares drawings of mechanical, electrical and structural systems, equipment, topographic and hydrographic surveys.
  • Performs related work as required.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Graduation from a high school or equivalent and one year of appropriate engineering related experience. Thirty semester hours of college training may be substituted for the required experience, providing such training included twelve semester hours of engineering related course work.
