General Functions |
|
Develops, implements, and administers education and/or volunteer programs for the community and serves as Department/Division media coordinator.
Distinguishing Characteristics of Work
This is responsible professional level and administrative work. An employee assigned to this classification is responsible for developing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating the community education activities of the Department/Division.
This employee must possess effective oral and written communication skills, the ability to plan, organize, and effectively present ideas and concepts to groups, skills in team building, consensus building, persuasion and negotiation. The ability to organize and coordinate work of individuals in various sections of the Department/Division and other County Departments/Divisions as well as external entities. Responsible for setting up public exhibits.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Unit Supervisor who reviews work through conferences, reports and results achieved.

Representative Duties /Assignments |
|
- Develops, implements and delivers education programs for citizens to include elementary, intermediate and secondary school levels, special needs groups and other community groups.
- Coordinates intervention programs with local juvenile justice authorities, human service agencies, school personnel and mental health practitioners.
- Provides assistance to Department/Division personnel in implementing community outreach programs.
- Conducts training on relevant topics.
- Sets up Volunteer Training classes.
- Completes accurate work products, quality publications and media campaigns.
- Maintains individual involvement and creativity. Contributes to key office initiatives and decisions.
- Exhibits care and tact in handling sensitive material or situations.
- Completes assigned projects on time.
- Develops and coordinates goals for the assigned education program.
- Writes, edits and develops a Division newsletter. Also composes news releases and articles for publication in various trade journals.
- Coordinates, organizes and expands the Division’s volunteer participation program.
- Serves as liaison for media utilization involving Department/Division functions and coordinates those activities.
- Disseminates information to the media when requested regarding agency policies and practices.
- Maintains educational resource files and orders educational and volunteer program supplies.
- Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications |
|
Graduation from an accredited college or university with Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Natural Sciences, Journalism, Fire Science, Communications or a related field and two years of experience in public relations journalism, fire service or a related field. Additional years of the required experience may be a substituted for the specified education on a year-for-year basis.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license. |
