HOUSING INVESTIGATOR

General Functions
   Responsible for investigating suspected cases of public housing fraud.

This is specialized investigative work performed both in the office and in the field to ensure that clients do not misrepresent income or family composition. An employee assigned to this position investigates cases of suspected fraud and prepares them for necessary action if there are possible program violations. They must be able to work independently without constant supervision, have good organizational skills and the ability to communicate effectively with the general public and clients.

Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Senior Investigator, Office of Professional Standards. Work is reviewed through oral and written reports for compliance with Section 8 Housing Assistance established rules, regulations and policies.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Receives and investigates reports of suspected program abuse.
  • Represents Public Housing Authority at hearings. May testify in court or participate in administrative proceedings.
  • Performs random site visits to dwelling units.
  • Responds to and investigates anonymous calls regarding alleged program violations.
  • Disseminates information on HUD regulations and program abuse to participating landlords and tenants.
  • Verifies information obtained to establish accuracy of facts and information.
  • Prepares written case findings in clear, concise and impartial reports to supervisor for possible administrative or criminal proceedings.
  • Conducts background checks on applicants and program participants.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Social Work or a related field and two years of investigative work involving public housing, consumer fraud, criminal justice or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must not have been convicted of or plead no contest to a felony. An extensive background investigation will be conducted.

Must possess a valid Florida Drivers license and provide own transportation to be utilized daily in the performance of duties.
