General Functions |
|
Under limited supervision, responsible for directing and overseeing a unit of subordinate staff including developing procedures for the unit, initiating and directing special projects, maintaining liaison with internal departments and external agencies and preparing the budget. Reports to the Administrative Supervisor or designee, depending on area of assignment.

Representative Duties /Assignments |
|
- Directs and oversees personnel engaged in providing for the safety and security of staff and inmates. Supervises, coaches, directs and evaluates staff assigned to the unit. Develops and implements standard operating procedures for unit. Attends and conducts meetings as appropriate and relays information to staff.
- Oversees contractual compliance with agencies involved in programs and special projects.
- Maintains liaison with internal department and external agencies relevant to unit operations.
- Participates in preparation and implementation of budget for the unit to ensure efficiency and cost effectiveness.
- Ensures safe, secure and orderly movement of inmates and trustees throughout the facilities (as required based on area of assignment).
- Receives, reviews, processes and/or submits documents/files such as statistical reports, personnel reports, training plans, file reviews, purchase orders and various types of correspondence.
- Ensures an adequate inventory of supplies, equipment, etc.
- Assists and/or recommends training specific to the services provided by assigned unit.
- Oversees payroll/leave processes for the section.
- Performs other duties as assigned. .
Additional Specific Duties Based on Area of Assignment:
Unit Supervisor Classification
Responsible for overseeing and ensuring that staff classify inmates in accordance with policy and procedures. Manage inmate population and housing. Preparation and distribution of inmate profile reports, liaison with Programs, Medical, and Security staff. Coordinate authorization of courtesy holds, Drug Court and Work Release placements. Ensures appropriate inmate worker and/or program assignments. Coordinates special transports. Oversees sentence calculation and application gain time. Assist staff with interpretation of court orders regarding sentencing and other instructions from the court. Oversee the administration of special programs and projects and maintains records via the Inmate Management System.
Unit Supervisor Training & Staff Development
Facilitates, monitors and develops training sessions for the Department in accordance with departmental policy, state statutes and accrediting organizations.
Monitors the progress of cadets through Academy courses; tracks status of state exam results; assigns new cadets to facilities and shifts.
Supervises and directs all staff attending training sessions under the scope of authority issued by the Department.
Liaison for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Standards Training Commission including certification, instructors certifications and reviewing updates to the Training Management System.
Unit Supervisor Range Master
Maintains range operations and coordinates with internal and external agencies in response to critical incidents involving the range. Communicates critical information through the chain of command.
Controls range access and range schedule. Supervises all range activities.
Ensures that physical standards and maintenance of the range are performed on a regular basis.
Develops and implements effective in-service staff and firearm training programs to ensure an efficient, effective and responsible Corrections organization.
Plans and supervises on-the-job and emergency plans and procedures training.
Maintains and manages an inventory of all weapons and ammunition at the range.

Minimum Qualifications |
|
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and three (3) years of experience.Educational field of study and experience will be specified by the department based on area of assignment.
Must possess and maintain a State of Florida Correctional Officer Certification or obtain within one year of hire date.
Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License.
Additional Requirements for Specific Areas:
Unit Supervisor Classification Services
Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain Florida Crime Information Center/ National Crime Information Center (FCIC/NCIC) certification within three months of employment.
Training & Development
Certified Instructor for Firearms, Defensive Tactics, Electronic Controlled Weapons and/or General Instructor Techniques
Range Master
Certified Instructor for Firearms, Defensive Tactics, Electronic Controlled Weapons and/or General Instructor Techniques, Use of Lethal Weapons
Must possess and maintain or obtain within one year of hire date:
- Certified Range Master
- First Aid Certification (gunshot specific)
- Shoot House Instructor certification
- Armorer certifications

Preferences |
|
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Criminal Justice, Corrections, Psychology, Social Sciences or a closely related field.
Additional Preference
Unit Supervisor Classification
- Current State of Florida Correctional Officer Certified
- Three (3) years of experience in a Correctional setting

- Light welding skills
