Manages, coordinates and directs the delivery and support of emergency and non-emergency services to the citizens and visitors of Orange County. Responsible for the supervision of staff members/firefighters assigned to the unit(s). Assignments will be that of Field Operations, Training, Administration, or other work unit. Position may be reassigned as necessary to meet the operational need of the department.
Work is performed under the general direction of an Assistant Chief or Division Chief. Day to day duties are performed with considerable independence requiring the exercise of discretion, sound judgment, and initiative while being committed to organizational values and providing on-target customer service and positive community relations.

Representative Duties /Assignments |
|
- Responds to emergencies, supervises and performs firefighting activities.
- Performs as Incident Commander for Fire Rescue response.
- Responsible for ensuring all personnel assigned to the unit(s) adhere to County and Department policies, rules and standard operating procedures.
- Plans, directs and coordinates the work of personnel assigned to the work unit.
- Responsible for day-to-day administrative functions as may be necessary for the operational needs of the department.
- Supervises personnel in both emergency and non-emergency settings.
- Provides and is responsible for day-to-day training and may include multi-company training activities.
- Reviews and develops operational procedures.
- Inspects and recommends uniforms, bunker gear and clothing specifications.
- Serves as a representative to the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and/or the Field Operations Center (FOC) during emergency activations.
- Performs Project Management.
- Assesses and evaluates assigned personnel and develops programs to enhance career development.
- Investigates on-the-job accidents and injuries and reviews Workers' Compensation claims.
- Responds to requests/complaints from citizens, members of other departments and co-workers.
- Performs duties that ensure every station or work unit under direct command has adequate staffing.
- May serve as liaison between local, state and national media and the department.
- Ensures that the maintenance needs of each station are fulfilled.
- Participates in focus groups involving a variety of issues
- Performs and Supervises physical training activities
- Creates and develops marketing strategies in order to promote the department.
- Develops a preventive maintenance schedule for department apparatus and ensures such schedules are followed effectively and efficiently.
- Develops and writes specifications for the purchasing of fire equipment.
- Prepares and assists in preparing annual budget.
- Performs other duties as assigned or as may be necessary.

Minimum Qualifications |
|
To be promoted as a Battalion Chief candidate must possess a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution approved by the United States Department of Education in Fire Science, Emergency Medical Service, Public Administration, Business Administration, or closely related field.
Must have two (2) years of experience as a Lieutenant or higher rank with the Orange County Fire Rescue Department. Must possess and maintain Florida Firefighter Certification. Must possess and maintain Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic Certification. Must have the Florida Certification as a Fire Officer II, or Fire Officer I certification attained prior to July 1, 2014.
Must successfully pass the incumbent physical assessment test (IPATÂ) or have passed (as per OCFRD SOP Admin. 35-3.2C) the IPAT within the previous 24 months. |

Preferences |
|
Master's Degree from an accredited institution approved by the United States Department of Education in Fire Science, Emergency Medical Service, Public Administration, Business Administration or closely related field.
Proficient writing and communication skills.
Special certifications (e.g. Paramedic, Hazmat Technician, Fire Safety Inspector)
