General Functions |
|
Perform administrative and scene work in the coordination of the performance of medico legal death investigations to include photography, evidence collection and processing, Laboratory submissions and other related forensic practices. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Medical Examiner and Senior Program Manager and is reviewed through conferences, records, reports and results achieved.

Representative Duties /Assignments |
|
- Perform and supervise medico legal death investigations.
- Supervises the investigative unit. Coordinates, schedules and assigns work activities. Reviews completed work assignments, administers performance management and performance appraisals.
- Verifies the quality control of each case and chain-of-custody in collection and submission of evidence from the scene, toxicological and histological submissions, photography, and personal effects collection and release.
- Ensures the accuracy and quality of investigative reports and other related documents generated during the course of the death investigation.
- Enforces policies and procedures related to this type work as established by the department and must be able to write and enforce new policies when new forensic procedures are implemented.
- Provides death investigation training to staff, various law enforcement agencies, and educational institutions.
- Liaison with all law enforcement agencies and makes independent decisions based on knowledge of Medical Examiner related laws and regulations.
- Assists the Chief Medical Examiner and Senior Program Manager with budgetary matters and planning. May purchase investigative supplies as needed.
- Keeps abreast of new developments in the field of forensic sciences and learn and implement the latest technologies and practices for death investigation and/or forensic processing.
- Responsible for the inventory, upkeep, and maintenance of all county vehicles and cell phones for the office.
- Responsible for the inventory, upkeep, and maintenance of all investigative equipment.
- Assists the Chief Medical Examiner and Senior Program Manager with any related duties as required in the process of accreditation preparation and other matters.

Minimum Qualifications |
|
Masters Degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement or directly related field and two years of death investigative experience working with a medical examiner/coroner office; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
Ability to work under adverse conditions.

Preferences |
|
Familiarity with the foundations of the National Association of Medical Examiners accreditation qualifications and policies.
Supervisory death investigative experience working with or in a medical examiner/coroner office.
