LEAD FORENSIC TECHNICIAN

General Functions
  

This position will be responsible for assigning daily cases in the morgue and drafting orders for toxicology supplies, linen, and personal protective equipment. Assisting with bi-annual inventory of all evidence and tissue storage rooms and will take lead in the training of interns and new hires, beyond the initial training set forth by Forensic Services Supervisor.

Work is performed under the close supervision and direction of the Medical Examiner and/or Forensic Services Supervisor, who evaluates performance based on technical knowledge demonstrated in performing assigned duties.

 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  

Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties, it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.

  • Leads the forensic technician unit. Assists in fingerprinting, releasing, and dissection of deceased persons brought to the Medical Examiner's Office. Also includes photography, collection, processing, and maintenance of personal effects and evidence, collection, processing, and submission of toxicology and histology specimens, and related computer data entry.
  • Assists with the unidentified decedent cases by working with specialists to clean, prepare, and analyze specimens. Ensures cases are complete, protocol followed, and entered into the national unidentified database when applicable.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the field of forensic sciences and learns and implements the latest technologies and practices for forensic processing.
  • Assists in the training of forensic technicians, on-call forensic technicians, and interns.
  • Responsible for taking CT scans and X-rays on designated cases and assists in the training of how to use the equipment.
  • Assists with conducting quality assurance (QA) on forensic technicians via a monthly case review for accuracy of chain-of-custody in collection and submission of evidence, toxicology and histological submissions, release of human remains, release of personal effects, and quality of photographs and fingerprints.
  • Performs monthly scale calibrations per National Association of Medical Examiners' accreditation requirements.
  • Assists with drafting supply and linen orders and is responsible for coordinating and picking up linen.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  

Associate degree from an accredited institution in Forensic Science, Biology, Criminal Justice, Anthropology, or related field and four (4) years of experience working as a forensic technician, autopsy assistant or in a law enforcement position that handles evidence collection such as a crime scene investigator.

 
Preferences
  

Proficient in Microsoft Office.

Ability to use X-ray and CT equipment and digital camera photography.
