TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECH I

General Functions
   This is an entry level position that performs routine maintenance, repairs, construction and inspection of traffic signal systems and equipment.

Work is performed under the general direction of the Signal Shop Supervision staff or higher-level technician. Performance is assessed through inspection, reports, meetings, observations, and results achieved.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Assists in the installation of detection, communication and signal cable on overhead span or in underground conduit for traffic signal systems that include but are not limited to signal monitoring, wireless radio, fiber optic networking, and alternative vehicle detection (video, microwave, inductive loop, and radar).
  • Assists in the installation, preventative maintenance and repair of traffic signal equipment that may include cabinet assemblies, overhead signs, pedestrian signals, school crossing and school warning beacons.
  • Assists in programming electronic signal control equipment either by keypad or laptop computer. Compiles and produces reports of the statistical data from the traffic signal controller and performs conflict monitor testing.
  • Operates hand and power tools, such as drill, chain hoist, loop sealant applicator, concrete pavement saw, and voltmeter.
  • May operate a lift or bucket truck, auger truck, forklift or trencher under the general direction of a higher-level technician or supervisor.
  • Works with electrical systems that include low voltage systems (electronic circuitry) as well as typical household voltage systems (120-240).
  • Sets out traffic control devices, such as warning signs and cones, ensures proper placement of vehicles and performs flagging duties as needed. Monitors traffic movements while on the job site to ensure safety of crews. Escorts and assists house or large structure movers along County roads.
  • Cleans and services vehicles, equipment and tools.
  • Work is regularly performed outside, frequently in adverse weather conditions such as cold, heat, rain, and wind.
  • Work is performed adjacent to traffic and may be in an aerial lift or bucket truck at heights up to 40 feet.
  • Occasionally, working indoors in the preparation of associated traffic signal equipment.
  • Duties require occasionally moving, lifting, pushing or pulling signal equipment up to 60 pounds.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   High school graduate or equivalent and documented completion of vocational training in construction, electricity or electronics; or one year of related experience may be substituted for the vocational training.

Must pass the Traffic Signal Technician I entry level test at 70% or greater within 6 months of hire.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.

Must obtain and maintain the State Maintenance of Traffic training within three months from date of hire.

Must obtain and maintain the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I certification within 12 months from date of hire.

Must work over-time, be on standby or on-call as directed by Foreman and/or Management.
 
Preferences
   Ability to read and interpret schematics and/or blueprints

Ability to troubleshoot electrical and electronic circuitry.

Basic computer skills to include utilizing word processing, spreadsheet and email software.
