General Functions
   Performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive, heavy equipment, fire trucks and other emergency apparatus and equipment.

This is skilled work in the maintenance and repair of hydraulic systems, fire pumps, fire equipment, diesel and small engines. Work is performed without close supervision, exercising independent judgment as to the necessary method of repair. Oral and written instructions are received from the Foreman/Senior Foreman and/or Shop Supervisor, who evaluates performance based on supervisory abilities, demonstrated mechanical skills and achievement of desired results.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Plans assignments, provides technical and functional guidance and leads the team with complex repair assignments.
  • Demonstrates extensive knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment and maintenance of fire vehicles.
  • Schedules work to be performed to assure efficient operation of the shop and proper field repairs are made. Operates computer to maintain records of preventative maintenance and repairs.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on all fire department vehicles, including repair and replacement of clutch, rear differential, rear drive axles and wheel bearings.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs systems, to include hydraulic equipment systems, brakes, electrical, air conditioning, pumps and aerial hydraulics. Services, repairs and rebuilds fire pumps, including valve adjustment, and electrical systems.
  • Maintains accurate records and paperwork, such as work orders, service logs, parts, and attendance forms.
  • Maintains all supplies and equipment required on the service trucks.
  • Inspects work performed by subordinates and road tests vehicles.
  • May serve as Acting Shop Supervisor in the absence of the Senior Foreman/ Shop Supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or as may be necessary.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent and six years experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic.
  • At least 4 ASE or EVT certification, must obtain Master Level Certification within 2 years of hire date in the position.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Operator's license. Must have three years of the six years of experience working on a Fire Fleet Equipment (if assigned to Fire Fleet Operations).
  • Must provide adequate tools to perform mechanic's duties as required.
  • May be required to possess and maintain the appropriate valid Commercial Driver's License for the type of equipment operated.
