Provides specific dental services to inmates at the Orange County jail. Responsibilities include teeth cleaning, performing annual assessments, taking dental x-rays, sterilizing instruments, documenting patient care and treatment plans, providing patient education about proper diet, oral hygiene and oral health.

Work is performed with limited independence under the general guidance and supervision of the Dentist. Performance is evaluated through observation, discussion, and review of reports and inspections.

Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties, it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.

• Performs prophylaxis dental cleaning and applies sealants and flourides if indicated.
• Takes and documents detailed medical and dental history to include documenting patient care and treatment plans. Performs and documents in detail oral assessments and communicates findings to the Dentist.
• Educates patients about proper diet, oral hygiene and oral health.
• Sterilizes instruments and operatory.
• Maintains inspection control procedures. Responsible for the security and inventory of supplies, such as needles, syringes, instruments and medications.
• Schedules patients and all other clinical activities.
• Maintains instrument count log and autoclave log on a daily basis.
• Takes dental x-rays.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Associate’s degree from an accredited dental hygiene program and one (1) year of experience in direct patient care performing initial dental assessment, patient education, and prophylaxis cleaning.

Must possess a current Florida Dental Hygienist License.

Must possess a current AHA BLS/CPR Certification.
