(BUSINESS UNIT) NETWORK OPERATIONS SPECIALIST

General Functions
  

Responsible for the operation and maintenance in a client server environment for the Utilities Department's LAN/WAN to include providing system administration for the department's WAN, domain and various applications. Provides timely customer service and support for multiple applications and approximately a thousand users.

Work is performed with considerable independence under the direction of the Utilities IT Section Manager or designee.

 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  

Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties, it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.

  • Responsibilities include network hardware/software installation, performance tuning, network component integration, network performance checks, and connectivity verification.
  • Applies network security enhancements, policies, user details, and enterprise printing assignments utilizing active directory services, remote software tools, and Ivanti Management System.
  • Provides customer support services directly and remotely for the departmental desktop and laptop users in the areas of hardware, software, and problem resolution.
  • Monitors and maintains operational aspects of computer systems including network printers, scanners and other peripheral devices as well as providing support services. Diagnoses, prioritizes and troubleshoots problems to ensure network service levels are met.
  • Administers the County and departmental policies & guidelines to maintain accountability for IT equipment including ensuring Item Location Change Reports are completed and documented on all equipment transactions. Provides departmental support for the annual Property Accounting Inventory of IT assets.
  • Maintains hardware and software inventories using established procedures and industry tools. Complies with software licensing requirements.
  • Performs after hours support for critical Utilities Department information technology systems.
  • Provides server infrastructure support by monitoring and maintaining servers, data center rack systems and equipment, and backup power systems. This includes the design, implementation, and administration of virtual server technology.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Engineering or closely related field and two (2) years of experience with computer networks and server hardware systems including customer support services. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year for year basis.

 
Preferences
  

Training and/or certification in network technology.

Experience in basic programming and script or SQL writing.

A+ Hardware certification.

Certification in Microsoft systems and networking technologies.
