General Functions |
|
Coordinate printing projects for the pre-press section of Orange County Graphics Division and provide technical guidance to co-workers in the operation of print shop equipment and machinery. Serves as division safety coordinator; monitors supply inventory for work in progress.
Distinguishing Characteristics of Work
This is skilled work in setting up and operating offset and digital press equipment to produce a variety of printed materials. An employee in a position assigned to this classification is responsible for producing neat and accurate final products. Functions as quality control person for printing and bindery area.
The employee may operate photocopy equipment, plate-maker and other auxiliary machines. Additional responsibilities include selecting the correct type of ink, grade of paper, and appropriate equipment for each job produced. The employee also provides functional guidance to lower graded or less experienced employees.
Work is performed under the general supervision of Orange County Graphics Supervisor, who reviews completed work for neatness, accuracy and compliance with customer specifications.

Representative Duties /Assignments |
|
- Sets up and operates offset and digital press, working from artists’ layouts to produce line work, half tones, duo-tones, multicolor work and process-color work, perfect registration, and overlays.
- Selects correct grade and weight of paper; sets correct water solution (depending on the plate to be used); selects the correct ink; sets the feeder according to the stock, (air, suction, blower, and buckle adjustment).
- Operates other presses and auxiliary machines such as photocopy plate-maker, collator, folding machine, stapler, paper punching, binding, cutting and perforating machines.
- Operates bindery and printing equipment in the event of other employees’ absence.
- Instructs employees in the operation of photocopy equipment, plate maker and other production equipment.
- Advises the supervisor concerning improving employee performance and production area growth.
- Cleans, oils, and adjusts machines and performs preventative maintenance.
- Provides functional guidance to lower graded or less experienced employees.
- Receives paper or supply orders and confirms their accuracy.
- Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications |
|
Graduation from an accredited college with an Associate of Arts Degree in graphic arts or a closely related field and two years experience operating offset press machines and complex auxiliary printing equipment. Additional years of the specified experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. |
