General Functions
   Performs general and special education work in coordinating educational activities of the handicapped program within Head Start.

Distinguishing Characteristics of Work

This is responsible para-professional work teaching fundamental academic subjects in the field of special education.

An employee in position assigned to this classification is responsible for planning prescriptive, educational programs in the fundamentals of special education for children who are educable or trainable and those with specific learning disabilities. Duties include individual and group teaching, utilizing the professional programs and resources.

Work is performed with considerable judgment and discretion. Work is reviewed by a supervisor through conferences, oral and written reports and for achievement of desired results.
 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  
  • Assists in providing training to personnel of the handicapped services program of Head Start.
  • Providing necessary resource information to teachers on specific learning problems.
  • Utilizing the resource information center to provide individual instruction to children in specific, selected situations.
  • Assists in maintaining detailed records of children's progress, behavior or any special problems which may arise; prepares and submits reports accordingly.
  • Assists in various capacities in accomplishing goals of the handicapped services program.
  • Performs other related work as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
   Graduation from high school or equivalent and three year's experience in working with handicapped children; or a Bachelor's degree from and accredited college or university in early childhood education, or and equivalent combination of the required education and experience.
